A recent story in the news is about toxic chemicals in human milk.http://www.healthaim.com/breast-milk-toxic-chemicals/27981  These chemicals come from common household products (cookware, pizza boxes, lining of cans) and also from all the manmade compounds used in fertilizers and food, pesticides and plastics. We can not digest these chemicals; they build up in our organs, alter our DNA and make us either sick or susceptible to sickness.
Stories such as this never mention that if human milk is polluted, cow milk is also polluted. Infant formula contains chemicals that are not listed on the label (one example is MSG), and is made with polluted cow milk.  “About half of the animal fat ingested by Americans is from some form of dairy product, and EPA estimates that, for dioxins, one-third of an adult’s total daily intake comes from dairy products. Children are estimated to have higher percentages. Like dioxin, the other PBT pollutants are likely to be widely dispersed in the environment, bioaccumulated through the food chain and ultimately result in low level contamination in most animal fats.” http://cfpub.epa.gov/ncea/cfm/recordisplay.cfm?deid=22425.
Storie like this one never mention that human milk is studied because it is easy to obtain. Taking a biopsy of tissue is difficult and expensive; it is cheaper and easier to have a mom squeeze a few drops of milk into a container than to stick a needle into a person and take a sample of their flesh to study.
Stories like these are misleading as they cast a shadow over human milk. The real concern is the impact of all the pollutants on you, me, our world, and our babies. The public needs education so that everyone learns that it is chemicals and pollutants that are bad for us all. Human milk is still best for our precious babies.
