Disarm the NRA.
Last night’s news tells of another random act of violence in a town full of friends and music: http://www.theadvertiser.com/story/news/local/2015/07/23/shooting-reported-grand-theatre-johnston/30598925/ This is becoming commonplace. The scenario is always the same, and too familiar: a crowd of people plus one lone crazy man with a gun. Mass shooting epidemics are only a small fraction of the total gun violence in the US, although they attract the most media attention. http://www.vox.com/2015/7/24/9030337/gun-violence-mass-shootings The US has the highest number of deaths from gun violence of any developed country. There are more deaths by guns in 14 states than there are by cars. http://takingnote.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/07/16/gun-deaths-versus-car-deaths/
100 children contract measles at Walt Disney World Resort and the country panics. California politicians and industry joined forces to mandate that all children be vaccinated. Other states are considering similar actions, although no child has died of measles.
2 children a week die from guns in the US. The public has no protection from gun violence. Yet the NRA still lobbies to protect its interests and politicians turn a deaf ear to this public health menace.
The slogan is “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.” Obviously, people can’t be trusted with deadly things. LIke cars that also kill, guns need to be insured and licensed. Drivers need eye exams; gun owner need background checks. Drivers need education; gun owners do too.
A public campaign against the NRA is a logical response to stop this epidemic. Vaccinate your life against gun violence. Target the NRA; contain it and isolate it. Disarm the NRA!
