Early Communication can mean fewer diapers.
Today I met my first dyad where the mother was using a parenting style that kept her busy catching baby pees and poops. She had an awareness of and a communication with her 3 month-old baby, and knew to put baby on a potty after feeds and mimic the sound of peeing (“s-s-s-s-s-s-s . . .”) or pooping (making a raspberry noise). Between 40 and 70% of the time, the baby would let go in the potty, saving a diaper change.
I am not sure if I would strongly endorse the EC method of avoiding diapers, as it can mean, when added to breastfeeding, that the mother is busy with her baby all the time, pretty much non-stop. I remembered how it takes a village to raise a child, and saw why; that growing brain wants stimulation and nourishing most of the time, except when sleeping. One or two parents would have a rough time parenting alone; this mother told me that she lives in community, where she can get help by asking. Even then, she felt that she could use more assistance, the kind that comes without asking.
This glowing, sparkly bright 3 month old loved her mommy. Her mommy loved her. Seeing love shining between mommy and baby during breastfeeding was precious, tender and wonderful. I noticed how close and engaged the mother and baby were with each other, so natural and at the same time, so rare. Most babies I see are wrapped like burritos and plugged, carried strapped into car seats that hurt the elbow of the person carrying them. It is rare to see a baby carried in arms, another reason today was a treat.
I’ll have to think more about the early communication and putting baby on and off a potty several times an hour. While breastfeeding several times an hour is easy, because I could walk around the house while nursing and keep doing my work, frequent pottying is more difficult as the mamma can’t do it while doing something else.
I like not using and keeping landfills free of diapers; it is the non-stop intensity of the relationship that makes me wonder if I would have enjoyed such a way to parent.
What do you think? Can today’s parents learn to be tuned into their babies enough to pick up the subtle signals of a full bladder or bowel?
