Postpone jury duty for breastfeeding.
In 1975 and again in 1990, I was summoned for jury duty. At those times, I was also breastfeeding my babies. There was no way I could leave my babies to give my full attention to a trial. I would have had to leave the trial every few hours to take milk out. This would have been disruptive to legal process, and it would have been undermining my responsibility as a voting citizen.
I wrote letters to the Jury staff. I said that I was willing to serve on a jury, and asked for my duty be postponed, due to my baby’s need for me. In both cases, i was excused. A few years later, i was called to jury duty and was happy to go.
This bill will support family values and the importance of breastfeeding for both the mother and the baby. Healthy babies are the future of our nation. Babies that aren’t breastfed grow up with a greater chance of having chronic disease: diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Call your legislator and tell them that you support such a blll and would like one for your county.
