Fracking is devouring the earth. In a quest for oil, natural gas released by fracking is being burned. The fires from our burning planet are seen from space ships. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/at-night-giant-fields-of-burning-natural-gas-make-north-dakota-visibile-from-space-2533561/?no-ist
“The government has known for years that oil deposits lay a couple miles beneath North Dakota farms, but it was only until fracking technologies recently developed that they finally had a means of tapping into those deposits. Fracking works by pumping water and chemicals under ground, fracturing rocks and releasing oil. As the oil rises to the surface, natural gas often comes with it. Today, 29 percent of the natural gas extracted in North Dakota is just burned away. This wasted amount represents enough gas to heat half a million homes.” (Follow us: @SmithsonianMag on Twitter)
We are burning up our planet in order to power all our gadgets, light up the dark, drive 1,000 miles in a day,and send people orbiting into space. We are polluting our own air and water, without which no living thing can survive. We are making ourselves sick.
“Workers found dead atop separator tanks from exposure to wastewater fumes. Cows birthing stillborn calves on ranches near well-pad clusters. Children with cancers — leukemia, lymphoma — in places with no known clusters. “For a while, all we had were anecdotal reports, which the industry bashed as ‘bad science,’ ” says Miriam Rotkin-Ellman, a senior health scientist for the NRDC. “But in the past few years, there’s been a torrent of studies finding worrisome air pollution stemming from oil and gas sites. The impacts of this pollution are regional, not just local, meaning it can make you really sick from miles away,” and that the people most susceptible to its toxic effects are the ones at either end of the life spectrum: “fetuses and the elderly.”

What will it take for people to realize we are making it impossible for our grandchildren to live?
WTF is going on?
